What Your Body Is Actually Doing When You Feel Stressed

A man sits in a meeting, staring at an email he has not opened yet, and his heart starts pounding like he is about to sprint. His palms go damp. His stomach tightens. Nothing in the room is physically dangerous, yet his body is reacting as if it is. This is not weakness or an overreaction. It is a very old survival system doing exactly what it evolved to do, just aimed at the wrong kind of threat.
In 1915, Harvard physiologist Walter Cannon gave this reaction a name that has stuck ever since: fight or flight. Cannon studied how animals responded to danger and found a consistent pattern. Within seconds, the sympathetic nervous system floods the body with adrenaline and noradrenaline, redirecting blood away from digestion and toward the large muscles, sharpening vision, and speeding up the heart. The goal is simple, get more oxygen and fuel to the muscles that might need to fight or run.
A slower system follows right behind it. The hypothalamus signals the pituitary gland, which signals the adrenal glands to release cortisol. Where adrenaline hits fast and fades quickly, cortisol takes longer to rise and can stay elevated for hours, keeping the body on alert and mobilizing energy reserves. Together, these two systems are built for a specific kind of problem, a short, physical emergency that ends with either escape or safety.
The trouble is that almost nothing in modern life looks like that anymore. Stanford neuroscientist Robert Sapolsky has written extensively about this mismatch, pointing out that humans are among the only animals capable of triggering a full stress response just by thinking about something. An overdue bill. A tense conversation still to come. A mistake made three days ago that will not stop replaying. A zebra's stress response switches off the moment the lion is gone. A person's can stay switched on for a meeting that has not even started yet.
The trouble is that almost nothing in modern life looks like that anymore.
This response does not show up identically in everyone. Some men notice it mainly as a racing heart or a tight chest. Others feel it lower down: a knotted stomach, a clenched jaw they only notice once it starts to ache, tension that settles into the shoulders and stays there long after whatever triggered it has passed. Which sensation shows up first tends to be fairly consistent for a given person, almost like a personal signature. Learning your own version of it, the specific way stress tends to announce itself in your body before the thought behind it has fully registered, is one of the more practical uses of understanding this system. It gives you an earlier warning than waiting for the thought itself to surface, since the body usually reacts before the mind finishes naming what it is reacting to.
That difference matters, because the fight or flight system was never designed to run in the background for hours or days at a time. It is built for intensity, not duration. When it fires for an actual short term demand, it sharpens focus and performance. When it fires because of an email, a memory, or an argument that has not happened yet, the body still pays the same physiological cost, elevated heart rate, tensed muscles, disrupted digestion, without ever getting the physical release the system was built around.
None of this means the reaction is a malfunction. It means the signal is doing its job without enough information to tell an actual threat from an anticipated one. Recognizing that gap is often the first useful step. It reframes a racing heart before a hard conversation not as a personal failure to stay calm, but as a predictable response that most people experience and few talk about out loud.
Simple, physical actions can help tell the body that the threat has passed, even when the stressor is not something you can run from or fight. Slow, deliberate breathing, a short walk, or splashing cold water on your face all send a signal to the nervous system that it is safe to stand down. The goal is not to eliminate stress, which is neither possible nor even desirable, but to give the body more accurate information about when the emergency is actually over.
