Not All Stress Is the Enemy
Why the same racing heart can mean two different things, and what a century of research on stress and performance actually supports.
Not all stress deserves to be treated like the enemy. The nervous system does not actually distinguish much between the tightness before a job interview you are excited about and the dread before a conversation you are trying to avoid. Heart rate climbs, focus sharpens, muscles tense in both cases. What differs is not the biology so much as what the moment means to you, and that difference turns out to matter more than most people assume.
Hans Selye, the endocrinologist who did more than anyone to define stress as a biological concept in the mid twentieth century, drew a line between two kinds of stress response. He called the first eustress, a term built from the Greek prefix for good, describing stress tied to a challenge that feels within reach, a competition, a deadline you believe you can hit, a first date. He called the second distress, the kind that feels like it is happening to you rather than something you are moving toward. Selye's point was that stress itself is not the variable that predicts harm. The sense of control and capability layered on top of it is.
This idea gets invoked constantly under the name Yerkes-Dodson law, the claim that performance follows an upside down U as arousal increases, too little stress and you are flat and unmotivated, too much and you fall apart, with a sweet spot somewhere in the middle. The law traces back to a 1908 study by psychologists Robert Yerkes and John Dodson, who ran mice through a discrimination task while varying the intensity of a mild electric shock. It is worth knowing what that original study actually found, because it has been stretched well past its original scope in the century since.
Even within the original experiments, the classic curve only showed up clearly in the version of the task that was hardest to learn. In the easier version, more shock simply meant faster learning, no downturn at all. Psychologists have pointed out for decades that this detail rarely survives translation into textbooks and management seminars, where the law gets presented as a fixed, universal formula for optimal pressure rather than what it actually was, a narrow finding about mice, shock, and task difficulty, later inflated into something much broader than the data supports.
Consider two men both feeling their pulse quicken before public speaking. One has chosen to give this talk, has prepared for it, and feels a current of anticipation running under the nerves. The other has been told at the last minute he has to fill in and feels caught off guard, unprepared, exposed. Their heart rates might be nearly identical. Their experience of the moment, and their performance once they start speaking, will likely be very different, not because of the physiology, which is doing roughly the same thing in both cases, but because of what each man believes about his ability to meet the moment in front of him.
None of that means the underlying intuition is wrong, only that it is far less precise than it is usually presented. Difficult, unfamiliar tasks do tend to suffer under high pressure in a way that simple, well practiced tasks do not. What the research actually supports is something closer to this, stress that comes with a sense of agency, that you have some real influence over the outcome, tends to sharpen performance and feel almost energizing. Stress that comes with a sense of helplessness, that nothing you do will change what happens, tends to do the opposite, regardless of how it gets labeled.
This distinction has a practical use. Before writing off a stressful moment as bad news, it is worth asking a more specific question, does this feel like a challenge I have some real shot at, or does it feel like something being done to me that I cannot influence. The first kind of stress, even when it is uncomfortable, is often a sign that something matters to you and that you believe you can meet it. That is not a problem to manage away. It is closer to evidence that you are still in the fight, which is a very different thing from being crushed by it.
