Multitasking Is Not Really a Thing Your Brain Does

What feels like doing two things at once is actually rapid switching, and each switch leaves a cognitive trace that keeps draining focus long after you have moved on.

Replying to an email while half listening to a meeting feels efficient in the moment. Research on how attention actually works suggests it rarely is. The brain does not run two demanding tasks in parallel the way a computer runs two programs. It switches rapidly between them, and each switch comes with a cost that is easy to underestimate because it happens in a fraction of a second.

Psychologist Sophie Leroy's 2009 study, published in Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, gave this cost a specific name: attention residue. Participants in a workplace simulation who moved to a new task before finishing the previous one carried a lingering cognitive trace of the unfinished work into the next task, measurably hurting their performance on it. The surprising part of her finding was that simply completing the first task before switching was not enough to eliminate the residue entirely. Part of the mind stayed tangled in the previous task regardless, and the effect did not fade in seconds. It persisted across the entire duration of the next task.

This distinguishes attention residue from multitasking in the strict sense. Multitasking refers to attempting two things genuinely at once, which research consistently shows degrades performance on both. Attention residue is subtler and, in some ways, more relevant to an ordinary workday: it describes what happens even when you are doing only one thing at a time, sequentially, if you switched to it before mentally finishing the last one. You can feel entirely focused on the task in front of you and still be paying an invisible tax for the one you left behind ten minutes ago.

This distinguishes attention residue from multitasking in the strict sense.

Separate research from Gloria Mark at UC Irvine, who has spent years studying interruptions in real workplace settings, found it takes an average of around 23 minutes to fully return to a task after being pulled away from it, whether by a notification, a colleague, or a quick check of something else. A widely cited Stanford study led by Eyal Ophir, Clifford Nass, and Anthony Wagner compared heavy media multitaskers against light ones directly and found something that runs against the obvious assumption. Heavy multitaskers performed worse, not better, on tests of attention, memory, and task switching, suggesting frequent switching does not build a skill for it so much as it erodes the underlying capacity to stay focused on any one thing.

It is worth being fair to the complexity here. Not every study agrees on every detail, and some research on media multitasking has found more mixed results depending on exactly what is being measured. What holds up consistently across the strongest studies is the core mechanism: what people experience as multitasking is functionally rapid switching, not true simultaneous processing, and that switching is measurably costly rather than free.

The practical implication is less about willpower and more about structure. Reaching a genuine stopping point before switching, even a small one, appears to reduce residue compared to switching mid-task. Batching similar tasks together, replying to messages in one dedicated block rather than as they arrive, reduces the total number of switches in a day, which matters more than how efficient any single switch feels. The goal is not becoming better at multitasking. Based on what the research actually shows, that specific skill may not be meaningfully improvable, and chasing it may be costing considerably more focus than it is saving.
