Why the Things You Do Every Day Stop Feeling Like Anything

A well documented process called sensory specific satiety explains why favorite meals, routines, and rewards reliably lose their charge with repetition. The same mechanism helps explain why bad habits tend to escalate and why good ones can start to feel flat.

The first cigarette, the first drink at the end of a hard week, the first bite of a favorite meal, tends to register more strongly than the fifth or the fiftieth. This is not a matter of getting used to something in some vague, general sense. It is a specific, well documented process that shapes both why bad habits tend to escalate over time and why good habits can start to feel flat and mechanical even when nothing about the routine itself has changed.

Psychologist Barbara Rolls, who spent much of her career studying eating behavior, first at Oxford and later at Penn State, documented a version of this specifically around food, a phenomenon she named sensory specific satiety. In her experiments, people rated a food as highly pleasant at the start of a meal, then rated that exact same food as measurably less pleasant after eating a portion of it, even while their rating of a different food they had not yet touched stayed just as high as before. The drop was tied to the specific food itself, its taste, its smell, its appearance, not to overall fullness, since introducing a new food after the first had lost its appeal reliably brought appetite and enjoyment rushing back.

The broader principle behind this, sometimes described as hedonic adaptation, extends well past food. The same basic pattern, an experience that reliably delivered a certain hit of pleasure or relief gradually delivering less of it through nothing more than repetition, shows up in research on everything from lottery winners whose reported happiness settled back toward their prior baseline within roughly a year, to substance use, where the escalating doses common in addiction are partly the body and brain adjusting to what used to work and demanding more of it to produce the same original effect.

The broader principle behind this, sometimes described as hedonic adaptation, extends well past food.

The lottery winner finding is worth spelling out a little further, since it is one of the more surprising illustrations of how far this principle reaches. Early research comparing lottery winners to a matched comparison group found that within roughly a year, the winners rated their everyday pleasures, a good meal, a joke, a compliment, as measurably less enjoyable than the comparison group did, even though their overall reported happiness had settled back close to where it started. One interpretation researchers have offered is that a single enormous positive event can raise the baseline someone measures ordinary pleasures against, so the same joke or the same good meal now has to compete with a memory of winning the lottery rather than with an ordinary Tuesday, which is a much harder bar to clear.

The exact mechanism behind why novelty specifically restores the lost appeal, whether it is a true dishabituation of the same underlying response, or something more cognitive, involving expectation and attention resetting themselves, is still debated among specialists who study this closely, and it would be overstating the evidence to claim the science has fully settled the question either way. What is not in dispute is the behavioral pattern itself, well replicated across decades of research: repetition reliably blunts a reward, and introducing something different, even something small, reliably restores some of what repetition had worn away.

This cuts in two directions that are both worth sitting with. For a habit someone is trying to escape, the drink, the late night scrolling, the fact that it delivers less and less over time is not really a reason it works less well as a fix. It is a reason people tend to need more of it, more often, to chase the same original effect, which is part of what makes so many bad habits creep steadily upward rather than staying stable over the years someone has them.

For a habit someone is trying to sustain, the workout that used to feel exciting and now feels like another box to check, the flatness is not necessarily a sign the habit has stopped working or that motivation has permanently disappeared. It may simply be repetition doing exactly what repetition reliably does to any experience, blunting it, in which case the fix is not more willpower but a deliberate, planned injection of variation, a new route, a new format, a new version of the same underlying behavior, restoring at least some of what sameness has quietly worn down over time.
